The Supernormal Period in the Mammalian Ventricle1
نویسنده
چکیده
Exploration of the excitability during recovery from previous response of various nerve and muscle preparations has revealed a period of heightened excitability following the relatively refractory period. Since the threshold at this time is found to be lower than subsequently or at rest, this phase has been designated as the supernormal period. This period of enhanced excitability may exist normally or may be produced by such agents as fatigue, acid, or veratrine. In the frog ventricle a supernormal period was found by Adrian (1921) when the fluid bathing the tissue was acidified, and Wastl (1922) detected supernormality in fatigued preparations. Eccles and Hoff (1934) noticed occasional supernormality in the pacemaker of decerebrate cats, while Lewis and Master (1924) and later Rothberger and Goldenberg (1936) presented evidence for its existence in the conduction system. The object of this study has been to determine 1, whether a supernormal period exists in the mammalian ventricle; 2, what its position is in respect to the ventricular electrocardiogram, and 3, what factors may influence its occurrence.

Microelectrode techniques were used to investigate the effects of rate and rhythm changes upon the period of supernormal excitability during repolarization in isolated canine right and left bundle branch and Purkinje fibers. The same microelectrode was used for both intracellular stimulation and recording. Excitability curves (strength-interval curves) were measured as the minimum depolarizing ...

It was recently shown that supernormal conduction in the diseased His-Purkinje system is more common than previously thought, and is always associated with prolongation of refractoriness. To assess whether supernormal conduction could also occur in the accessory pathway of patients with ventricular pre-excitation, 21 patients with manifestly prolonged refractoriness in the accessory pathway wer...

The electrophysiological characteristics of the period of supernormal excitability and supernormal conduction were investigated in the isolated canine His-Purkinje system. Strength-interval curves were determined as the minimum transmembrane current required to bring the impaled fiber to threshold potential following a conducted action potential. During the period of supernormal excitability, 1...

The supernormal phase of conduction is a short period of paradoxically improved conduction which may occur during an early phase of the recovery cycle of cardiac conducting tissue. The situation is paradoxical, for the improved conduction occurs during a short critical early period, while later impulses are blocked or have greater conduction delays. The term is, in a sense, a misnomer since con...

A supernormal period of intraand interatrial conduction was observed in five patients during premature stimulation of various atrial sites with driving cycle lengths ranging between 500 and 600 msec. Electrograms were recorded with filtered, 1-mm apart, bipolar catheter electrodes placed in the high right atrium, coronary sinus, and midleft atrium. The supernormal period, which lasted from 90 t...
